Salangai Oli

I was very fortunate to catch this programme on radio that plays the songs from a selected movie every Monday. Yesterday, it were the songs from Salangai Oli - the sound of anklet. True to its name, the movie is filled with classical Indian dances and songs. The songs are real gems. Very rarely can you find classical Indian songs reaching out to ordinary people in such impactful manner (the only other movie that did that was Sindhu Bairavi). Even a person like myself who know nuts about classical Indian tunes and beats, can listen to all its songs with such deep appreciation. The songs evoke multitude of emotions. Some of the songs depicts love while others on seperation.

I have uploaded my favourite one here. This song is where the two parted lovers will meet again after many years. The lady is now a widow and the man is in the brink of losing his life to alcohol. Kamalhasan dancing on a poll across a well with a backdrop of rain, thunder and lightning. Jaya Prada surrounded by mountaneous conflicts for her lover finally decided to put the red sign of a married women just to make her love happy. Their hands touching in uncertainties. Its purely raw emotion.

Some of the songs are also coupled with beautifully choreapgraphed classical dances. I bet that it has made every soul who has watched to wish they can dance like that. The dances beautifully epitomises the emotion in their facial expressions and movements. To top all that, this movie starred one of my favourite actors of all time, Kamalhasan.
