We were greeted by the new impressive Kuching International Airport. A smaller replica of the KLIA. The crowd was small and it was easy to get a cab to the city. A 15 minutes ride brought us to our hotel. I was happy coz the hotel was just across the Main Bazaar and the Waterfront - which are the heart of the city. We settled in for a short rest and ventured out late in the afternoon for our first lunch in Cat City. A kind soul recommended a joint near our hotel for Sarawak Laksa. But upon arriving at the place, we decided to try Koh Loh Mee - a local delicacy. Lets just say - I don't have the Sarawak toungue. It was like eating Maggie Mee without any seasoning, you get what I mean.
After an eventful lunch, we took a stroll along the Sarawak River, bought tickets for the evening river cruise and returned to the hotel. Alas! It started to rain and the picture of our river cruise began to fade fast. Luckily, the rain became a drizzle and we managed to get umbrellas from the hotel. So we weathered the drizzle and walked to our cruise boat. The boat was nice, we sat on the upper deck. The cruise itself isn't anything to boast about. There weren't any impressive scenaries along the river and soon I was bored. The cruise was saved by the sumptuous snack served on board and an entertaining cultural dance show. The guide on board very kindly told us about the Moon Cake festival being held at Carpentar Street - just a few streets away from our hotel.
So we headed there and was quite delighted to see two long rows of food stalls lining the streeet. I ate along the way, picking up tiny snaks here and there. My hubby isn't quite a 'snacker' so we headed up to a nice place we saw along the river from the our cruise earlier, called Kathulistiwa. We had our first taste of Sarawak Laksa there, nothing to brag about. Thus far, our adventure with Sarawak food doesn't speak much, no offence Sarawakians. We returned back around midnight and called it a day. We hoped for a better food journey tomorrow.
